Saturday 24th September 2011 – The Traffic Jam

Well, I made it. As bizarre as it sounds, I actually made it in one piece. Getting from Bedworth to Leicester wasn’t a massive ordeal, except once we got into the city itself. There was traffic almost literally backing up to the city entrance. Now, not one to complain, but Bedworth is only about twenty minutes from Leicester, and we left at twenty five to two. Booking into halls for myself was supposed to be between 2pm and 3pm, and we arrived at about quarter to three. Just in time. A twenty minute car journey took AN HOUR AND TEN MINUTES. I wasn’t impressed.

Anyway, after an ordeal featuring Lewis doing his best Houdini impression, by vanishing from where he was supposed to be guiding us from, (long story, I might tell it if I find time), we arrived at the New Wharf Hall of Residence. While dad parked up, I was ordered to go and get my keys. The sibling tagged along, and I did the deed. After a few ‘formalities’, I picked up the keys to what was to be my empire for the next academic year. I was given a quick tour by a woman I think was called Claire. Cue the next disaster. Drum roll please…

When we finally got to my room in the furthest block on the second floor, we found the keys didn’t work. Me being me, I kept my face calm, although inside I was slowly dying. Then, while Claire ran off to remedy the problem, another guide brought my neighbour along. Joe was his name, and, shock horror his keys were wrong too. While I ordered myself not to throw myself from the nearest window, (which would have been impossible anyway, as they all have wires stopping them from being opened too far), I wandered up and around the area, looking at the kitchen and bathrooms, Claire finally made a re-appearance, this time with the right keys. She proceeded to open the door. I entered and observed my kingdom. The first think I noticed was that the blind clashed with the furniture. This also meant my duvet cover would also clash. While I was quietly seething, I thanked her for all her help. She then showed me all the areas I’d already explored in her absence. After she left, I went to help dad and Lewis bring in my luggage. What had already been brought up had already been taken to the floor above. KEEP CALM. After getting my things to the right floor, and slightly unpacking, we went for a walk around the campus area in an attempt to get our bearings. Upon returning, we realised that we’d forgotten some things. Only little things. Among them my printer and the photos I needed for my student card. Might I stress how hard it is to keep oneself from suicide while bashing you head into a desk, getting rather peeved about your own incompetence. After this however, we decided not to worry, Dad saying he might make a trip up tomorrow. I love that man. A bit later on, I bid farewell to the family, and set about sorting out where I’d left out.

It was around this time I began meeting my fellow flatmates. To put it simply, they’re a fantastic bunch, hailing from all over the place, and I can see myself getting on very well with them. They’re all very friendly, and a plus side to them is that they all seem to have their geeky tendencies. I think I’ll fit in pretty well… Oh, and part of the night was taken up by at least fifty different people piling into our kitchen for a planned at the last drinks party. I couldn’t even get into my own kitchen. However, I met some more people, including one of my part course mates, although she was only doing the History side of things. After everyone had gone, which was about two hours from when they arrived, the night ended with the five remaining flatmates just sitting around a bottle, glass and can strewn kitchen table chatting about anything and everything. We ended up going to bed at about quarter to one. All in all a fun, yet stressful day.
